Effective Workplace Mental Health Training for All
One-third of Americans say work has an adverse effect on their mental health, and 80% say they feel stress at work1. Early and mid-career employees put mental health near the top of the list of priorities for their career. The focus on workplace mental health that gained momentum during COVID-19 is here to stay.
When you invest in the mental health of your workforce, you are driving employee engagement and productivity, strengthening your bottom line while building a positive workplace culture where employees feel valued, supported, and empowered to do their best work—an essential foundation for long-term success.

What is the NTA® at Work model?
The APA Foundation’s trademark training framework, Notice. Talk. Act.®, is backed by the scientific expertise at the American Psychiatric Association and promises impact despite the low time commitment. Available in ten languages, Notice. Talk. Act.® at Work is both accessible and effective. It’s delivered via a 45-minute eLearning module geared toward people managers and all employees.
Those who take the training will learn to:
- Notice the signs of a potential mental health condition by recognizing changes in behavior and understanding when they warrant concern. (If a direct report who’s usually outgoing and wants to chat by the water cooler has been withdrawn or quiet, don’t ignore it.)
- Talk to your colleague to express your concern. (“You don’t seem like yourself lately. Is everything okay?”)
- Act by connecting them to the appropriate resources so they can access mental health care (“Did you know that we have an Employee Assistance Program? It really helped me when I lost my dad.”)
Manager Training
Many of us spend more time with our managers on an average day than we do with our families. The original version of our training harnesses the potential of the manager-direct report relationship to start meaningful conversations about mental health in the workplace – in under an hour.
Peer-to-Peer Training
Our peer coworkers can be sensitive to small changes in our demeanor. We updated the manager training to provide wraparound mental health support in the workplace, something that many Gen-Z employees are prioritizing in their careers.
Industry-Specific Training
Certain careers place us at a higher-than-average risk of mental health conditions. Forthcoming from the Center: Industry-specific versions of Notice. Talk. Act. at Work, including ones for attorneys and construction workers.
Testimonials
“The Center has been focused on workplace mental health long before the recent interest in workplace wellbeing post-pandemic. They have developed leadership, expertise, and partners over many years that position them on the leading edge of the needs of employers and their workforces. This allowed us to put out resources that are timely and relevant, that can help employers of all sizes improve the workplace experience and mental health of our workforce.”
— Gaurava Agarwal, M.D., Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Services, Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine

“Recently, our managers and employees have been asking for help to recognize when their colleagues are struggling. We partnered with the American Psychiatric Association Foundation’s Center for Workplace Mental Health to customize and launch a training program for our employees globally. The training explains what distress signs to look for, how to engage, and how to know when to escalate a concern.”
— Lynn Castrataro, Vice President of Total Rewards, Trane Technologies
