Center Advisory Council

The Center Advisory Council provides valuable strategic guidance to the Center for Workplace Mental Health. Members of the council are appointed by the American Psychiatric Association Foundation Board of Directors. The council represents a diverse range of experience and perspectives, including employers, psychiatrists, and related purchasing stakeholders. We are grateful to the council for their leadership, passion for improving mental health with employers, and ongoing commitment to the Center for Workplace Mental Health.

Gaurava Agarwal, M.D.

Gaurava Agarwal, M.D., is Associate Professor in both the Departments of Medical Education and Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine. He serves as the Chief Wellness Executive for Northwestern Medicine. He also serves as the Director of Faculty Wellness for Northwestern University.

Dr. Agarwal is a nationally recognized educator who has won the prestigious Association for Academic Psychiatry Junior Faculty Award, Devneil Vaidya Junior Faculty Teaching Award, White Coat Investor Financial Educator of the Year Award, Illinois Psychiatric Society Educator of the Year, and is the first psychiatrist to win the George H. Joost Award for outstanding clinical teacher from Northwestern’s Feinberg School of Medicine. He serves as a wellness consultant to multiple national research groups and is a certified leadership, organizational, and well-being coach.

Even when she was working as a gas station cashier, she believed her tenacity would empower her to become a success. She paved her way forward relentlessly, becoming a respected CFO and later a transformative entrepreneur and CEO. After successful partnership with private equity, Shirin led the creation of a one-of-a-kind platform in the home services and franchising space—scaling across 12,000 cities in North America. She continues to serve as an advisor and investor, using her hard-earned wisdom to support others in building bold, enduring businesses.

Kasia Curry, M.P.H, CEAP

Kasia Curry is the Global Wellbeing Director for Baker Hughes an energy technology company that provides solutions for energy and industrial customers worldwide.

Prior to joining Baker Hughes, Kasia she spent more than a decade at GE Energy as HealthCare and Health Promotions Leader. She is dedicated to fostering environments that supports people to be at their best and true selves through an integrated approach to wellbeing including physical, mental, purpose, social, safety and security.

Stephen D’Antonio headshot

Stephen D’Antonio, M.B.A

Stephen D’Antonio is a former Wall Street executive who has gone all-in on learning about addiction and helping families. He contributes in a variety of ways to his mission of preventing addiction or improving outcomes including: advising business leaders and entrepreneurs, working directly with affected families, novel content creation, funding research, venture investing, and philanthropy.

Stephen spent four years as the EVP of Shatterproof, a national addiction nonprofit, developing educational materials and tools for companies and families. He is the sole creator of the website “Love the Kid, Hate the Disease: Lessons Learned from a Father Dealing with his Son’s Addiction.” Stephen is a co-creator and participant in the podcast series “My Child & Addiction.” He is a volunteer Parent Peer Addiction Coach with Northwell Health working with caregivers. Stephen is an Advisory Board Member for the National Center on Youth Prevention, Treatment and Recovery, for The Center for Technology and Behavioral Health at Dartmouth College and for Caron Treatment Centers.

Smita Das, M.D., Ph.D., M.P.H.

Smita Das, M.D., Ph.D., M.P.H.

Dr. Das is board-certified in psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, and addiction medicine and has over 20 years of research experience. She is a Clinical Associate Professor at Stanford and sees patients in the Dual Diagnosis Clinic. She is also the Vice President of Psychiatry and Complex Care at Lyra Health, where she leads product development, strategy and clinical operations for evidence-based clinical services and offerings, managing cross- functional teams.

Dr. Das is a past president of the Northern California Psychiatric Society and the American Psychiatric Association District Branch, and a clinical associate professor at Stanford School of Medicine. Dr. Das has received several prestigious fellowships and awards, including the ASAM Young Investigator Award, SAMHSA/APA Substance Abuse Fellowship, Ruth Fox Scholarship, American Society of Addiction Medicine, George Ginsberg MD Fellowship, Association of Women Psychiatrists Leadership Fellowship, APA Resident Recognition Award, and American Psychiatric Leadership Fellowship.

Monica Taylor-Desir, M.D., M.P.H., DFAPA

Monica Taylor-Desir, MD, MPH is a Consultant with the Department of Psychiatry and Psychology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN where she serves as the Associate Program Director for the General Psychiatry Residency Program at Mayo Clinic. She is the board secretary for the American Psychiatric Association Foundation which is the philanthropic arm of the APA. Dr. Taylor-Desir also serves as one the Minnesota Psychiatric Society District Branch Representatives to the APA Assembly. She is proud of the work of the APA, MPS and the APA Foundation in centering the mission of a mentally healthy nation where we live, learn, work, worship and play.

Prior to joining Mayo Clinic, Dr. Taylor-Desir worked as a community psychiatrist for tribal communities in Arizona for 12 years and as the Chief Medical Officer and psychiatrist for a tribal community in North Dakota for 3 years. The majority of her current clinic work is with the Olmsted County Assertive Community Treatment Team through a collaborative outreach agreement between Mayo Clinic and Olmsted County. Her research interests include: bipolar disorder in the Black community, optimizing treatment and access and suicide prevention.

Rachel Duncan

Rachel leads People Engagement & Culture, Regional Management Americas / Chair, dbEnable US at Deutsche Bank. She is responsible for designing, coordinating, and implementing strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing people engagement, fostering a positive organizational culture, and advancing Inclusion efforts.

She serves as Chair for dbEnable US, an Employee Resource Group committed to advocating for employees with disabilities, mental health challenges, and neurodiversity, and is a certified Mental Health First Aid at Work volunteer. Further she leads the Wellbeing Pillar for the Investment Bank Americas dedicated to fostering a healthy and balanced work environment for employees.

A champion for mental health, Rachel actively shares her personal journey with anxiety and depression to promote awareness. She has been recognized and celebrated for her commitment and contributions having been featured in the 2023, 2024, and 2025 Global Enable Role Model List by Involve- The Inclusion People and being awarded the 2024 Future Human Leader of the Year at the TLC Lions Human Awards Americas. She also serves as an Ally for the REAL Mental Health.

Rachel began her career in municipal bonds at Lebenthal and Company and has 25+ years’ industry experience following a bachelor’s degree in Sociology from New York University.

Deborah Fernandez-Turner headshot

Deborah Fernandez-Turner, D.O., DFAACAP, CHIE

Dr. Deborah Fernandez-Turner is the Deputy Chief Psychiatric Officer for Aetna, a CVS Health company. As physician-leader for mental health within CVS Health, she leads the consultation and implementation of evidence-based practices and holistic treatments for all levels of care. In addition, Dr. Fernandez-Turner provides expert support in mental health to Aetna’s care management program and provides input into national mental health policy in close conjunction with key stakeholders across CVS Health.

An expert in child and adolescent psychiatry, Dr. Fernandez-Turner was Children’s Medical Administrator for Aetna. There she was responsible for the oversight of psychiatric medical programs covering over 400,000 covered lives (children alone) as well as Quality Management, Utilization Management and Medical Management programs operated by the RBHA for children and adolescents. She is a fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a Distinguished Fellow of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

Charles Lattarulo, Ph.D.

Charles Lattarulo is the Vice President, Behavioral and Mental Health at American Express. Charles joined American Express in 2012 and was instrumental in evolving the employee mental health program from a US-only Employee Assistance Program (EAP) into the award- winning global Healthy Minds program. Charles received the HR Pinnacle Award in 2014 and the Edward P. Gilligan Award for Innovation in 2023, both in recognition of his deep commitment to supporting colleagues’ mental health.

Dr. Lattarulo served as Director of Behavioral Health at a home care agency, Clinical Director of an international Employee Assistance Program, and Director of Training and Clinical Instructor at a major metropolitan hospital. Dr. Lattarulo’ s vast expertise includes corporate behavioral health, anxiety and stress, bereavement, and substance abuse issues. His diverse role at American Express includes managing the company’s global mental health strategy, onsite EAP counselors, U.S. and global EAP vendor relationships, and behavioral health absence management.

Clayton Lord

Clayton Lord (Clay, he/him) is the Senior Program Director for the SHRM Foundation, the 501(c)3 philanthropic arm of SHRM, which focuses on widening pathways to work and helping every worker thrive by empowering HR leaders to be forces for social good. In that role, he oversees strategy, planning, program delivery, and program evaluation. He is a social impact executive with expertise in nurturing and evaluating complex initiatives that drive systemic change and expand access and opportunity for all. Clay holds a B.A. in English and Psychology from Georgetown University. He lives with his husband and daughter in Maryland.

Linda Rosenberg, M.S.W.

Linda Rosenberg is co-founder of the Office of CEO (OCEO), a boutique behavioral health advisory and investment firm that supports a select number of private sector companies and nonprofit organizations and associations. Additionally, Linda is an Operating Partner and Advisor to Empactful Capital and a Senior Advisor to Health Management Associates (HMA). Until June 2025 she served as faculty in Columbia University’s Department of Psychiatry.

Linda was President and CEO of the National Council for Mental Wellbeing where she increased membership to 3300+ organizations and grew the annual revenue from 2 to 55+ million. Her leadership helped pass parity; create SAMHSA’s Integration of Primary and Behavioral Health Care program; establish Behavioral Health Homes in Medicaid; develop Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics (CCBHCs); and introduced and brought Mental Health First Aid to scale. Prior to joining the National Council, Linda was New York State’s Senior Deputy Commissioner for Mental Health.

Hana Shin, Ph.D.

Dr. Hana Shin completed her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Fuller Graduate School of Psychology with clinical and research training at VA Palo Alto Health Care System. She is licensed to practice in California (License CA-25114) and New York (License 024512). Trained as a generalist practitioner with experience in health care systems and large multinational organizations, Dr. Shin treats adults and families recovering from mood, trauma, and anxiety disorders, adjustment difficulties, stress management, problematic substance use, and relationship difficulties. A former fellow in organizational leadership and work, Dr. Shin also consults with leaders to improve their effectiveness in the workplace and build organizational cultures that draw out the best from their teams while putting their humanity first.

John Tumeh, M.D.

Dr. John Tumeh is a board-certified psychiatrist with extensive training and expertise in treating a wide range of psychiatric conditions.

His approach to psychiatry is comprehensive and patient-centered. Dr. Tumeh begins by understanding each patient's unique psychological state, exploring their struggles, and identifying root issues, including past experiences and cognitive distortions. His commitment to integrating various treatment modalities ensures a holistic approach to healing.

Dr. Tumeh is a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, with board certification in Adult Psychiatry. Dr. Tumeh earned his Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the College of William and Mary, followed by his Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) from the University of Virginia School of Medicine. He completed his residency in General Adult Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh's Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic.

Maureen Sayres Van Niel headshot

Maureen Sayres Van Niel, M.D.

Maureen Sayres Van Niel, M.D. is a reproductive psychiatrist and a national leader and researcher in the field of women’s mental health and mental health care disparities in women and minorities.

Dr. Van Niel’s clinical work is in general psychiatry and all aspects of women’s psychiatry, including as a member of the Brigham staff; as director of psychiatry at a community health center and a day treatment trauma program; and as chief psychiatric consultant to the Diocese of Massachusetts.

Dr. Van Niel was elected president of the APA Women’s Caucus where she served from 2016 through 2021. In 2016 Dr. Van Niel was the first psychiatrist appointed to the Multidisciplinary Steering Committee of the U.S. Dept of HHS Women’s Preventive Services Initiative (WPSI). During 2020, Dr. Van Niel was elected chair of the APA Minority and Underrepresented (M/UR) Committee, where she and her colleagues have developed materials to address racial discrimination in all areas of medicine. Dr. Van Niel also has been passionate about the work of the APA Foundation, serving as an ambassador and contributor from 2016 through 2020.

 

 

Sidney Hankerson headshot

Sidney Hankerson, M.D., M.B.A.

Dr. Sidney Hankerson is Associate Professor and Vice Chair of Psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, where he works to advance mental health equity through partnerships with churches, youth sports leagues, and other community organizations. He is leading an evidence-based suicide prevention initiative for Black and Latino youth and serves on both the NFL’s Behavioral Wellness Committee and as a Second Opinion Physician for the NBA. Dr. Hankerson has received the 2024 Presidential Lifetime Achievement Service Award and the American Psychiatric Association’s Distinguished Service Award, and is a frequent keynote speaker at prominent venues, including the White House and United Nations. His work has been featured in major media outlets, and he previously served on the faculty at Columbia University before joining Mount Sinai. Dr. Hankerson earned his MD/MBA from Emory University and completed his psychiatry training at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.
